Elevator Research

I havn't quite started my elevator model just yet, but here are a few images of some elevators that have caught my eye in my quest for a good kick of inspiration. I also realize one of them is a speaker cabinet rather than an elevator, but it came up under image search and the shape of it would make an absolutely awesome elevator platform. Regardless of how well they work, they do provide some idea as to how elevators might look good or have an interesting way of working, or even just to have a poke at the elevator-oriented side of my imagination (and hopefully yours too..)

UT2004 Initial development

Here is a first stage of my UT2004 and the drawing it is based on. I've just basically built the geometry from my 2 point perspective to give a broad overview of how the form will look and added some lights so you can see certain details that may be hidden due to shadows... next step, adding basic necessities to make the space actually usable, ie. elevators, stairs and ramps, safty rails, maybe carve out certain spaces etc.

2 point perspectives

Apologies for the lack of posting for the past week, but here are my six 2 point perspective forms constructed each from 3 't' shapes, as well as 2 more for each with the horizon line shifted above and below the form. I felt a bit ambitious so i applied perspective and shading/highlights to the hatching on some of these. :)

ARCH1101 vs ARCH 1121

In the Blue Corner, Design Studio....and in the Red Corner, Architectural History and Theory1! Just a little something a drew during last Thursday's lecture... 't' shape combination ideas (and a few other doodles that I'm kinda happy with)... Goes to show that the creation of the new will inevitably override the study of the old. ;)

ps. Don't tell Paul about this!

(Very) Rough UT Model of one Perspective drawing

M*A*S*H* up :)

Zhang Yin Steve Jobs Donatella Versace

Zhang Yin has no shortage of critics of her proposed tax cuts for the rich and amendments to the Labour Contract Law. They claim she made the proposals only in the interests of the mainland's well-to-do. Apple CEO Steve Jobs seems to think so. Was it just another one of Jobs' classic put-downs of competing technology? Or did he really believe that she wanted tariffs reduced on environmental equipment imports because her paper-making business was highly polluting? Or did Jobs have another agenda?

Ms Zhang hit back, saying the charges against her were ignorant, ridiculous and unfair, She claimed her company was not labour intensive because it had the world's most advanced hardware and technology. They also have more memory to store more books, tight black trousers, and will play MP3 files.

"I am an entrepreneur, and I am a practical person so I dare to speak the truth, to let people see the progress of democracy and freedom. I think people look too much at marketing. My brother Gianni was all about daring and risking - that's how you obtain something special. I understand the need to follow the 'direction' but if you do it too much, you all end up the same."

Maybe Jobs was hiding something. Remember when Jobs denied that Apple would build an iPhone? Or the time he said that people would never want to watch video on an iPod? Jobs always misdirects attention away from what Apple is doing and it amazes me that people seem to fall for it time and time again.

12 more perspective drawings.

Here are 12 more (2 of each) one-point perspective drawings of the previous forms, this time with one appearing aove the vanishing point and one behind it. It is facinating how the words illustrate how a different perception can be influence by a different perspective.

6 perspective drawings

Posted here are six one-point perspective drawings of forms composed of intersecting "+" shapes. It is interesting to note that that they progress in complexity. The first two are simple extrusions, the next two are extrusions at different depths, and the final two are of different depths and different orientations of the "+".

Goodall's laboratory space. As a humble, practical area, it's simplicity correlates to the individual who is unaware of their potential to impact the world. The path to realisation is discreet but very real and in the corner.

The ramp joining the two spaces represents the very narrow, very long and unapparant path to realize the impact one has on the world, as well as a being symbolic of the distance and difficulty man faces to understanding the universe.

The monolithic roof is visable but not accessable. This coincides with the idea that man is significant in his ability to seek and understand the universe, even though it may not necessarily be in reach.

"ElectroLiquid Aggregation" quote

We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.

Stephen Hawking, in Der Spiegel, 1989

+

People just feel helpless, “what can I do, i'm just one person?”, and I think the most important message is to try and help everybody understand that every single day we make an impact on the world. You actually cant live through a day without making an impact on the world.
Jane Goodall, in a Q30 Exclusive Interview from the Albert Schweitzer Institute, 29 October, 2005

=

You may feel as though you are just a one person, on a minor planet of an average star. But realize that every single day, you do make an impact on the world, and every day bring us closer to an understanding of the universe.
